Conditions of Entry and FAQs

When you apply for an ABRSM exam at the Hindhead Music Centre you are subject to the ABRSM's terms and conditions, as well as our own. For the full ABRSM conditions of entry, please see their website. The following is only an indicative summary of their terms, plus our own rules and advice.

Withdrawal and refunds
You may cancel a booking up to 28 days before the examination date shown at the top of this page, in which case you will receive a full refund of the ABRSM examination fee, accompanist fee if any, and certificate fee if any. We cannot refund you until we have received a refund from the ABRSM, which may take some time. For the full terms of ABRSM refunds please see this ABRSM page. The HMC facility fee is non-refundable.
Withdrawal by HMC or your teacher (HMC candidates only)
If at any time before the examination your teacher or the HMC decide that you are not ready for the examination, we may decide to withdraw you. If that happens, the same rules for refunds of fees (above) will be applied as if you had cancelled yourself.
Date and time of the exam

Please make sure that you are available to take the exam on the date indicated at the top of this page, and the following day. This is because sometimes our session will run into two days. If you are unable to attend the exam at the date and time you are given, no refund will be possible.

Accompanist

An accompanist is normally required for all instruments except piano, guitar and harp. For HMC candidates, the fee for your accompanist will be added automatically if the instrument requires it.

The accompanist's fee includes the services of the accompanist for the exam itself and a short warm-up immediately beforehand. We recommend that you book at least one additional session a few weeks before the exam to rehearse with the accompanist. These sessions will be charged at £26.50 per half-hour.

The HMC accompanist is unfortunately not available for external candidates.

Piano parts for the accompanist

You must provide the piano music for your accompanist (including the HMC accompanist). Photocopies are not permitted. This is an ABRSM requirement.

ABRSM contact ID

If you have previously taken an exam with the ABRSM you will have been assigned a contact ID. You can find this on the mark sheet for a previous exam. If you are able to find it, please enter it here, since it helps ensure that your exam record at the ABRSM is complete. For Grade 6 and above it is essential since it is required in order to look up your Grade 5 Theory result.

If this is your first ABRSM exam, leave it blank and you will be assigned a new contact ID.

You can also leave it blank for now, complete the application, and then give us your contact ID later (but before the entry deadline).

Aural tests

Most ABRSM examinations include aural tests. Normally your teacher will prepare you for these. However you may like to book additional sessions to practice these tests. This service is available to external candidates as well as HMC pupils. Sessions are priced at £26.50 per half hour.

Grade 5 Theory

It is an ABRSM requirement that any candidates for Grade 6 or above must have passed Grade 5 Theory, which is an online examination taken independently of the practical exams. Normally the ABRSM will verify electronically that you have passed, based on your contact ID.

Jazz examinations

Unfortunately we cannot offer Jazz exams at HMC.
