Originally known as Hindhead School of Music, Hindhead Music Centre was founded in 1975 by the harpist, Ann Hughes-Chamberlain, whose aim has always been to offer excellence in music tuition to everyone, from complete novices to postgraduates, from toddlers to pensioners, from those who just want a rewarding hobby to gifted musicians. No-one has ever been turned away.

Our learners come from as far afield as London, Winchester, Chichester, Midhurst, Guildford, Godalming, Farnham, Petersfield, and even the Isle of Wight, as well as the surrounding towns and villages – Haslemere, Grayshott, Beacon Hill, Headley, Churt, Liphook, Bordon, Whitehill, Chiddingfold, and Fernhurst.

Ann’s philosophy is that music is a language which anyone and everyone can learn and enjoy, given the opportunity. The Centre provides unmatched quality of tuition and a whole range of superb additional services and facilities, which are free to those who take regular lessons here. Through teaching and practice, we aim to fulfil the musical potential of each and every one of our learners.

Hindhead Music Centre is a non-profit-making company limited by guarantee. Fees are set to cover the Centre’s running costs and no more; any profits are ploughed back into the Centre itself.  There is an affiliated charity, The Friends of the Hindhead School of Music, which was founded in 1979 (charity no. 1003878).

Almost all instruments are taught at the Centre, including piano, guitar, harp, violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, drums, and singing. We teach many types and styles of music from early classical to modern popular music. There are currently about 500 pupils of all ages visiting the Centre for weekly tuition, and another 200 or so come for various classes, group playing, orchestras, musical appreciation talks and concerts.

The teaching staff, about 40 in number, are all professional musicians in their own right, with a love and understanding of teaching both beginners and advanced students, whether children or adults. Many are performers in the concert halls of the world, and are equipped to teach performance etiquette and control of nerves as part of the musician’s art and technique.

Browse our website or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and you’ll see what makes Hindhead Music Centre so special. We offer a vast array of musical services, from Mini-Music for four to seven year olds to recitals by internationally acclaimed artists. In between we host and lead orchestras, choirs, and musical appreciation talks. We are also well-known for our renowned residential summer holiday courses which provide a unique experience both to children learning to play and to pianists working at an advanced level.
